Why Equine Fusion Has Become a Valuable Tool in My Veterinary Practice
By Dr. Robyn Meadow, DVM – Meadow Lane Equine Clinic, Vancouver, Canada
As an equine veterinarian, my focus is helping horses perform at their best while maintaining long-term soundness and comfort. Through Meadow Lane Equine Clinic in Vancouver, Canada, I work extensively with sport horses and combine traditional veterinary medicine with acupuncture and chiropractic care to provide a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Outside the clinic, I am actively involved in the horse industry as both a competitor and breeder. I compete in the hunter and show jumping disciplines and breed jumping horses through embryo transfer using my own competition mares and stallion. Being involved in the sport from multiple perspectives gives me a unique understanding of the challenges horse owners face and the importance of practical solutions that support both performance and welfare.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to use a wide range of Equine Fusion hoof boot models. From both a veterinary and horse owner perspective, they have become an incredibly useful tool in many different situations.
Supporting Natural Hoof Function
One of the defining features of Equine Fusion hoof boots is the flexible, shock absorbing sole. Unlike many traditional hoof boots that rely on more rigid construction, Equine Fusion allows the hoof to function more naturally while still providing protection and comfort.
From a clinical standpoint, this is particularly important when reducing concussion and supporting physiologic hoof mechanics are priorities. The boots have become a regular part of many rehabilitation programs I oversee, helping horses remain comfortable and active while promoting healthy hoof development.
A Valuable Tool for Barefoot Transitions
One of the areas where I have found Equine Fusion especially useful is during barefoot transition programs.
The boots allow horses to comfortably move away from traditional shoeing while continuing to exercise appropriately. During this process, I often see improvements in overall hoof quality, including sole depth, heel function, and hoof capsule strength.
For horses with hoof sensitivity or those requiring additional support during rehabilitation, the boots provide a practical way to maintain comfort without compromising movement.
Real World Applications
Beyond rehabilitation, Equine Fusion boots have proven useful in a variety of everyday situations.
For horses dealing with laminitis, they can provide protection from abrasive footing while supporting a barefoot management approach. They are also an excellent temporary solution when a horse loses a shoe, helping maintain comfort and hoof integrity until the farrier can make repairs.
I have also used them to help protect corrective shoeing in young horses, during trailering to reduce trauma and excessive hoof wear, and throughout winter when frozen or abrasive footing can make turnout and riding more challenging.
Their versatility makes them a valuable addition to almost any horse owner's toolkit.
Practical for Horse Owners
From a horse owner's perspective, Equine Fusion boots are lightweight, easy to apply, and generally very well tolerated by horses.
This may seem like a small detail, but ease of use is often a major factor in whether rehabilitation plans are followed consistently. Having a product that owners can confidently apply and use every day helps improve compliance and ultimately contributes to better outcomes for the horse.
My Preferred Models
Of the models I use most frequently, the Active and Trekking boots are my personal favorites.
Both offer an excellent balance of flexibility, durability, and ease of application while continuing to support natural hoof function. The Active model is particularly straightforward to put on and remove and fits a wide variety of hoof shapes.
For horses with more challenging hoof conformation, the Ultra Jogging Shoe can be an excellent option. While it may take slightly more effort to apply, it performs exceptionally well in situations where other boots struggle to stay in place and provides added stability against twisting.
A Valuable Tool for Veterinarians and Horse Owners
What I appreciate most about Equine Fusion is the ability to select different models based on the individual horse and situation.
Whether supporting a barefoot transition, managing hoof sensitivity, assisting with rehabilitation, or simply providing protection during periods when shoeing is not possible or desired, the range of options allows for a practical and horse-centered approach.
For both veterinarians and horse owners, Equine Fusion hoof boots have become a valuable tool for maintaining hoof comfort, supporting natural function, and helping horses stay active throughout every stage of their journey.
